My doctor told me today that I need to lose weight. (As if that was a secret). I quit smoking about 3 years ago and have gained 40 pounds since quitting. Hey when I start eating--(especially sweets) I just can't stop!

Sorta like during my drinking days, which ended 8 years ago.

Don't tell me to just exercise. I do walk a lot as reccommended. It's the food man!
Help.

Try switching to water instead of whatever else it is that you drink...the average person could wipe out 800-1000 calories per day just by doing this.

OMT, take it for what its worth, regardless of how old you are, I think you need to look at a long term solution

Appetite suppresants are definitively on the "NOT COOL" list

I suggest the following

-find stuff to eat that is low in calories (say candy low in sugar etc)
-drink lots of water
-try something like scandiet or slimfast , you REPLACE a meal not eat that PLUS the meal, say you give up the supper and drink/eat the substitute instead of your normal meal
-NO mcdonalds, fast food of any kind, I supose pizza once a month is ok and subway would be good for you
-exercise and THEN eat, so you walk and then have your food, that way your metabolism will be operating at "high gear" and the food will not be stored as fat which is what typically happens when you just eat and the body doesn't need nutrients

you say you don't drink so the "no beer" kind of thing doesn't apply

if you really want to try something a little more radical than that I have seen a drug (Xenical) its not a appetite supresant but rather a chemical that prevents your body from fully absorbing the fat content of the meal, so it goes straight through

whatever you do, good luck losing weight, it will make you feel better I am sure

Try cutting down on the carbs, like rice, bread, pasta, potatoes.

And if that doesn't work you can try cocaine.

There is nothing wrong with using appetite suppressants if they are used responsibly.

Responsible use will in fact contribute to a sensible weight loss program.

Most any stimulant will help suppress appetite.

Ephedrine is available in most convenience stores for about 10-15cents per 25mg

I would suggest after eating a decent breakfast of fruit, grain, juice, eggs that 75mg should be about right to suppress appetite for the rest of the day until evening. At that time, you will notice that when you eat your sensible evening meal that you'll be less inclined to double down portions.

Side effects include a faster level of perspiration, so you'll want to be sure and get plenty of water.

Oh and before someone gets confused and retorts, the recently banned substance by the FDA was 'ephedra' - similar in nature, but distinct in its chemical makeup.

It was - like most such bans - pretty useless regulation, since no one was helped by the ban and meanwhile millions of satisfied customers were forced to seek alternatives for a very useful product in its own right.

Oh, the above advice comes with a presumption that you are otherwise in reasonable health with decent blood pressure, cholesterol, heart rate and blood sugar levels.

barman--I'm going to ask at the drug store Eckards this morning about ephedrine, that you mention. I've never heard of it.

Thank you all very much.

http://www.scandiet.com/

That thing is quite good, you can substitute some of your daily meals with it, low in calories/fat and full of the nutrients that everyone needs.

You put the recommended amount in the blender, put water, turn the blender on for say 40 seconds and you drink it

Good thing is: it will fill you up and not leave you starving for 5 hours till your next meal is due

OLDMANTIME, your druggist is mistaken or he misunderstood your pronunciation of the word.

EPHEDRA is the banned substance.

EPHEDRINE is a distinct chemical compound and is routinely available in nearly any convenience store I've been in, other than 7-11.

CIRCLE K carries them here, along with most other gas station/food store deals.

It's sold here under two labels - EPHEDRINE PLUS and MINI TWO WAY

Not to be confused with MINI THINS which are a combination of caffeine and ephedrine and in my opinion creates way too much of a heart rate jump.

He didn't misunderstand because I had it written down for him to see. Now that I know the actual product name there are plently of places to look.
7-11--you say does not carry it. Maybe Wawa. That's the only other convience store off the top of my head in this area.
